05/09/08 Yellow House's "Police Auction" Fundraiser
In keeping with FilmRunner's mission of supporting independent films and their makers, FilmRunner Kitty drove down to Richmond, VA, USA on April 30th, 2008 to attend a fundraiser in the form of a "Police Auction" for Yellow House. (Yellow House is dedicated to bringing unique works of theater and film to Richmond, VA.)
The goal of the auction, in addition to continuing regular programs such as Project Resolution and Pretending Trees, was to raise $2500 for a computer and editing software that would allow Yellow House to offer classes to kids who could benefit from hands on experience with art and making films.
For the Police Auction, the Yellow House staff labored for months to transform the Firehouse
Theatre into a jail house - and quite successfully I might add! Attendees were greeted at the door by "policemen", interviewed, finger printed, registered (for bidding purposes), and then photographed. Once the processing was completed, the newly arrived inmates were ushered in through the giant jail door, past prisoners in their cells, and into the main room of the theatre which was draped in warning tape and barbed wire. Inmates mingled, ate finger food, purchased drinks from the bar, and bid on silent auction items (stored on bunks in empty cells) while DJ Reinhold spun.
Eventually, the Master of Ceremonies and Steven Harris (President of Yellow House) got things going with a live auction broken up by performances from Special Ed and the Shortbus, Dick Butt Kiss and the Tightends, Tyger and the Lamb, Herschel Statego, Herschel's Rockin' Bowlers, Cousin Sheckie, and Squadron Task Force.
Items for auction included: Season tickets to the Firehouse Theatre, a handmade stand up arcade system, The entire collection of Wholphin DVD Magazine, Signed Directors Cut of Donnie Darko, Film collections from local filmmakers, tons of gift certificates, CDs, shirts, artwork, 2 DVD collections from FilmRunner.Net, and much, much more.
Want to see MORE of the Yellow House Police Auction? Well, you're in luck! FilmRunner Kitty happened to snag some footage and uploaded the video to the FilmRunner.net MySpace account! So check it out, comment, and be sure to add us as your friend!
